PDAs / SmartPhones in the UVU System

Important Information about PDAs and SmartPhones in the UVU System

Current GMS and BES users should be aware that their PDAs and SmartPhones will need to be transitioned to the new system. This transition can be very difficult.

Before transitioning your PDA/SmartPhone to the UVU system, we recommend that you complete all other migration/transfer/transition steps. Your address books and calendars should already be in the UVU system before connecting with your PDA/SmartPhone.

Our recommendation is to back up all of the data on your PDA/SmartPhone before attempting any transition. In fact, the transition process may require you to reset your device to factory defaults, removing everything from it. Use of these procedures is at your own risk.

We Recommend Working With A UVU Computer Technician To Transition Your PDA/SmartPhone.

Risk of Data Loss
There is a high risk of data loss on your handheld device. Any information, applications, etc. will likely be lost during the transition. Contacts, Calendars, and Messages currently in your device WILL be replaced completely by those found in the new UVU GroupWise system. Please do not attempt this on your own. Contact the HelpDesk for help in performing these procedures.

Time Element
This process can take anywhere from an hour to more than a day, depending on your device, the options you choose, and the problems we encounter in transitioning the device. In testing, we have found that our devices had to be reset to factory defaults, causing us to have to completely re-setup the device to our preferences.

How To Transition Your PDA/SmartPhone

GMS - for Palm, Windows, and other PDAs and SmartPhones

After backing up all data on your handheld, decide if you wish to reset your device to factory defaults. This will certainly make the process of the transition easier, but may or may not be required. We do recommend it, as it will simplify the process significantly.
  1. If you have reset your device to factory defaults, skip to step 3.
  2. Uninstall the Intellisync software from your handheld and your desktop if it is installed there.
  3. From your desktop, go to https://gms.uvu.edu, login with your UVU credentials, and follow the prompts.

BES - for BlackBerry SmartPhones

  1. Send an e-mail to Alan Castle, requesting a position on the BES server, and providing information about which address book you would like to have synchronized with your BlackBerry.
  2. You will receive a password via e-mail reply. This password must be entered during the BES activation.
  3. Factory reset your device.
  4. Follow the setup wizard and when prompted to activate your account on the BES server, provide your account information (UV_ID@uvu.edu), and the password you were sent.
The activation takes some time - sometimes hours - but when completed, you will be up and running on the BES server.
